Freeware: WYSIWYG et al.

HTML Source-Code Editing Programs

  1. HTML-Kit
    • Has a community and therefore many plug-ins available
    • Preview (IE+Gecko) + configurable HTML-Reference/Docu integration (The offline w3c reference plug-in is a must download)
    • Exceptional html-tidy integration (by predefined profiles, e.g. "convert to xhtml", "indent/beautify")
    • TopStyle integration, as same as easy integration of arbitrary external programs
    • No project support, but file explorer + FTP support
    • Auto-completion (This is rare! :-)
      • Nearly as good as the auto-completion of .Edit
      • Not triggered by "Ctrl+Space" or any key, but simply wait!!
      • Beware: It's only working after "<" (tag-compl.) or " " (attribute-compl.) -- not during an already half-typed tag or attribute
    • Auto-expansion (although they name it "auto-completion", too) -- triggered by a key after a special "pattern" will expand it as defined
    • Supports editor side include-files by a plug-in (includeHTML)
  2. PSPad
    • Auto-expansion, whereby the expansion is individually defined by an appearing wizard (so one could call it "some kind of auto-completion" -- but I won't ;-)
    • Preview (+ SelfHTML as chm-file can be integrated as HTML-Reference/Docu, which will behave context-sensitive)
    • TopStyle and html-tidy integration
    • Basic project support + FTP support
    • PSPad is better be seen as "General Scripting" program -- lacking the common toolbars and tabs, that support html-editing

  3. HTML Builder XP light
    • The "TagInspector tab" shows any available attribute for the current html-tag
    • Preview (IE+Gecko) + HTML-Reference/Docu integration (but access to reference only by mouse, not by keyboard *grrr*)
    • basic html-tidy integration (but no TopStyle or any other css editing support)
    • No project support, but file explorer + FTP support
  4. 1st Page 2000
    • Collection of some JavaScripts (and even some Perl scripts)
    • Preview + non-context-sensitive :-( HTML-Reference integration
    • No TopStyle integration, and only basic html-tidy integration
    • No project support; FTP support by an additionally downloadable module
    • (It was(/is) quite good, but it's seems to be outdated by the other programs.)
  5. Weaverslave
    • Basic supports for editor side includefiles
    • The "TagInspector tab" shows any available attribute for the current html-tag
    • Preview + rudimentary HTML-Reference integration
    • Unfortunately: neither html-tidy, nor TopStyle integration (only basic syntax-highlighting for css)
    • No project support, but file explorer + CVS integration (but no FTP)
  6. Phase 5
    • Supports editor side include-files
    • Good project support
    • Preview
    • No HTML-reference, TopStyle, html-tidy or FTP

  7. Scribe!
    • Preview (but was broken for me) + rudimentary HTML-Reference integration
    • Instead of TopStyle an own quite good css-editor is used (but no real competition to TopStyle)
    • Basic project support + FTP support
    • Supports include-files (but can not compete with Phase5)
  8. MAX's HTML Beauty++ 2004
    • Preview, html-tidy and project integration/support
    • No HTML-reference, TopStyle or FTP
  9. Alleycode HTML Editor
    • No internal Preview, HTML-reference, TopStyle, html-tidy, project or FTP

CSS Editor

HTML WYSIWYG Programs

  1. Nvu
    • Open-source
    • WinWord-syle-like typing of textual content
    • Integrated quite good css-editor
    • (I recommend Nvu for typing the content/text -- and one of the topmost "HTML Source-Code Editing Program" for the actual design phase)
    • (And always use "Tools >> Markup cleaner" after a while. It's simple, efficient and necessary!)
  2. Amaya
    • Open-source -- as proof-of-concept implementation of the w3c
    • (Produced wrong preview)

SVG Editor

General Purpose Editors (e.g. PHP et al.)

  1. SciTE
    • Open-source
    • Based on the (open-source) Scintilla editor-engine
    • Great many script- and programming-languages supported
  2. .Edit
    • Exceptional auto-completion (even for html tags and attributes)
    • Rudementary toolbars for html (but lacking common menus and tabs to qualify as proper HTML editor)
    • Preview + FTP
    • (It's not yet clear, whether it will be freeware after the current beta-phase)

FTP Clients

  1. FTP-Uploader
    • Easy and commonly known
    • Excludes can be defined
    • Mirroring supported (locally deleted files are automatically deleted of on the server, too)
    • Project-Support: Management of already transfered files (reducing upload time)
  2. FileZilla
    • Open-source
    • SFTP support
  3. CoreFTP
    • SFTP, browser integration
